Alice In Wonderland is meant to be creepy. Well, at least in my mind it is. When I read “Through The Looking Glass” as a child, I was disturbed yet intrigued by the imagery Lewis Caroll penned. The illustrations were haunting and memorable. Although I loved Disney’s animated version, I longed for something a bit darker, something that mirrored Carroll’s vision. As of Wednesday night, I need look no further than Tim Burton’s inspired interpretation. Similar to Burton’s version of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, “Alice” is just as sinister and subservice yet at the same time amusing, charming and fun.
As the film opens, we meet Alice, played wonderfully by newcomer Mia Wasikowska, at her very own engagement party. But the girl dressed in her trademark blue gown does not wish to marry the oafish red head, Harnish. (Leo Bill). All her life Alice has been told what to do. An arranged marriage was the last straw. To the rescue, in comes the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen) who lures Alice away from the uncomfortable proposal, and yes down the rabbit hole, the young miss follows, thrusting us the viewer into the magnificent world of Wonderland.
A sight to behold, Burton’s visualization of this magical place does not disappoint. Rich with vivid color and uniquely designed characters, I was a bit overwhelmed but very pleased. Bonham’s Red Queen was perfection. I think Miss Carter could have acted this role in her sleep. The performance was effortless. Crispin Glover’s, eccentricity was put to good use as the Knave of Hearts. Anne Hathaway as The White Queen I thought was perfect. Stephen Fry did an excellent job voicing the Cheshire Cat, who is the best rendered character in the film. Depp is on point of course as the Mad Hatter, and although his look is unsettling, one can’t help but like him. Alan Rickman’s voice as the Absolem Caterpillar is a flawless fit, I chuckled every time he called Alice a “Stupid Girl”. Ah that Snape, I mean Caterpillar.
I definitely enjoyed my trip to Wonderland. It met my expectations and I will most certainly watch this again. Now onto Dark Shadows!
